Day 3
Rome to Siena
We start the day with a visit, by
funicular, to the magnificent town of Orvieto perched on the cliff
tops with breathtaking views over the surrounding vineyards.
As you approach Orvieto you’ll see from a
distance that it rises on a plateau of volcanic tuff, surrounded by
a landscape of fields and vineyards. The walls appear to encircle
the city rather than elevate it, as though it were a fortress rising
on the flat valley floor of the river Paglia. Orvieto is one of
Italy's most unique and interesting cities because of its location,
charming medieval character, and its celebrated Cathedral which is a
gem of Gothic architecture. There are 10,000 people who live in the
city itself and another 15,000 in the valley and in the surrounding
hills.
Later we head for the deserted town of Bagnoregio,
once a thriving medieval town but now boasting just 15 residents!
Early evening we arrive at our hotel for 4 nights set in the heart
of the Tuscany region. (B,D)
Day 4
Tuscany Sightseeing
Today we experience essential Tuscany. We spend the morning
exploring the Chianti region by bike, ending at the beautiful
Castelo Meleto where we will taste the famous Chianti classic wines
and enjoy a light lunch. This afternoon we return to Siena, home to
Tuscany’s most celebrated festival the Palio with its famous
bareback horse race. Siena is a medieval city of brick and from a
vantage point such as the Palazzo Pubblico's tower, its sea of roof
tiles blends into a landscape of steep, twisting stone alleys. Time
for you to visit the Cathedral, Palazzo Pubblico & Piazza del Campo,
one of Italy’s most picturesque piazza. Tonight maybe a sunset
dinner overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills…….. (B, L)
Day 5
Tuscany Sightseeing
We leave Siena this morning for Pisa and
its famous leaning tower. We continue to Volterra.
Volterra, is a jewel of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance
art and it dominates the whole valley of the river Cecina. Besides
the cultural aspect, Volterra's charm is due to the uncontaminated
landscape, a way of life still moulded on a human scale, and an
artistic handicraft unique in the world: the manufacture of
Alabaster.
Later
this afternoon we stop at one of the most beautiful beaches on the
Tuscan coast on the Mediterranean. Some
time to swim in the Mediterranean Sea, soak up the sun and relax.
(B, D)
Day 6
Tuscany Sightseeing
Today we visit Cafaggiolo castle built in the 14th
century and considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance
architecture. We arrive into Florence for our guided tour including
Basilica of Santa Croce, Giotto’s belltower, Piazza della Signoria
and the Duomo. See a demonstration of Florentine leathercraft.
Why not join us for a
traditional Tuscan meal on our last night in Siena?
(B)
Day 7
Siena to Florence
A full
day for you to explore Renaissance Florence. Maybe visit the Uffizi
or Accademia museums, cross the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, shop for
Italian fashions or wander the streets and take in the atmosphere.
Tonight a chance to learn more about Tuscan cuisine at a cooking
class. (B,D)
Day 8
Depart for Rome
More
free time this morning to explore Florence, before traveling south
to Rome. On arrival in Rome enjoy a sightseeing tour before
checking-in to our hotel. Our last night in Italy……….have fun!
(B)
Day 9
Depart Rome
Unfortunately all good
things must come to an end. Your tour ends after breakfast with time
to swap addresses and say goodbye to new friends.
